The Yamaha MT-09 is deliberately naked. No fairing, no cockpit surround, just the engine, the frame and the rider exposed to whatever comes at them. For city riding and fast backroad blasts, this is part of the appeal. For motorway commutes or sustained riding above 100 km/h, the absence of any wind protection becomes genuinely tiring over time. A windshield designed for the 2021-2024 MT-09 solves this without changing the character of the bike.
Why the MT-09 Needs Different Wind Protection Than a Scooter
On a scooter like the TMAX, a windshield can be tall and wide because it works with the existing fairing to channel air cleanly. On a naked bike, a large screen would look out of place and would create turbulence because there is no fairing to work with. The MT-09 windshield is designed specifically for this situation: it is compact enough to suit the naked aesthetic while being shaped to deflect air over the helmet at typical riding speeds.
The goal is not full wind protection. It is a meaningful reduction in chest and head pressure that extends comfortable riding range without making the bike look like a tourer.
What Changes with the Screen Fitted
Above 90 km/h, the difference is immediately noticeable. The direct wind pressure against the chest and helmet reduces significantly. Head movement in crosswinds becomes less effortful. On a two-hour motorway section, the physical difference between riding with and without a screen is equivalent to carrying several kilograms less weight against your upper body.
At city speeds, the screen has no practical effect on riding. It simply sits there looking clean and purposeful.
Compatibility
This windshield is engineered specifically for the Yamaha MT-09 from 2021 to 2024. The mounting brackets align with the original instrument cluster fixing points and the upper fork crown. No drilling is required. The screen can be removed in under 10 minutes.
It is not compatible with the older MT-09 (2013-2020) because the headlight and instrument cluster geometry changed significantly in the 2021 model year redesign.
Material: Polycarbonate vs Acrylic
The screen is made from high-impact polycarbonate with a UV inhibitor coating. Polycarbonate is used for this application instead of acrylic (PMMA) for two reasons: it is roughly 10 times more impact-resistant and it does not shatter into sharp fragments if struck by a stone or in an accident. The UV coating prevents the screen from yellowing over successive summers.
The optical clarity is high. Looking through the screen at speed does not produce the visual distortion that cheaper screens create.
Installation
- Remove the two bolts securing the instrument cluster surround using a 5 mm Allen key.
- Position the windshield bracket behind the instrument cluster mount and secure using the supplied longer bolts.
- Attach the screen to the bracket using the four supplied bolts and rubber-backed washers.
- Adjust the angle by loosening the bracket bolts slightly and tilting the screen to your preferred position before retightening.
Installation time: approximately 25 minutes. Fully reversible.
Who Is This Screen For?
It suits any MT-09 rider who regularly uses the bike for distances over 50 kilometres, especially on faster roads. If your riding is exclusively urban and below 70 km/h, the aerodynamic benefit will be minimal. If you use the MT-09 as a primary transport machine for commuting and weekend touring, the windshield makes a clear difference to daily comfort.
